Our new unit is on plate tectonics and how these plates move. We start by looking at the history of plate tectonics (i.e. who first proposed the idea of plates moving) and then look at the evidence used to prove this. We then look at the mechanisms for the movement, and finally what happens when these plates move (i.e. earthquakes, volcanoes, etc.)
The resources for this can be found in the "Class Content Tab"
Lesson 1 was Wednesday the 25th of May
Lesson 2 was Friday the 27th of May
Lesson 3 was Monday the 30th of May
Lesson 4 was Monday the 6th of June
Lesson 5 was Wednesday the 8th of June
We also received an assignment on plate tectonics on Wednesday the 8th of June. This can be found in the assignments tab.

Test
We will be having a test on all of the content covered in our unit on light. This will be on Wednesday the 30th of March. This will include;
- What light is
- How light travels through different medium
- Refraction (make sure you know that refraction causes light to shift towards the normal when going from a low to high refractive index, and shifts away from the normal when going from a high to a low refractive index. Also make sure you can explain why refraction occurs).
- The law of reflection
- Total internal reflection
- Ray diagrams
- Colour
- The eye and parts of the eye
All of this information can be found in the presentations in the "Class Content" tab.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to comment on this tab, or email or chat to me in person.

The Eye
Our eye is an amazing part of our body. It takes in light and allows us to see what is going on in the world around us. During this unit on light we will be spending some time looking at the eye and examining how it works and how it interacts with light. To do this we will be spending a few lessons on an assignment on the eye.
To access the assignment, click here. The assignment will also be available in the "Assignments" tab at the top of the page. The assignment will be due on Wednesday the 9th of March at the beginning of the lesson.
If you have any questions regarding the assignment, comment on this post, or email or chat to me in person.

Light
Today we had a look at some ideas around light. We chatted about what light actually is, how it travels, and what happens when it hits certain solid objects.

Heat
Today's lesson was spent recapping on heat. The content from this should have been covered last year, however it is always good to make sure we are all on the same page, and to give ourselves a gentle reminder.

Writing a Report
Over the past two lessons we have been writing a report. This was based on the data collected from an experiment we covered in class. The main goal of this report was to work on the general layout of a report, to practice constructing a hypothesis, to work on our data collecting and analysis skills (including graphing and interpreting from graphs), and discussing our results (in our discussing section).
The experiment sheet can be found by clicking here
The instructions for writing the report can be found by clicking here
Both of these documents will also be uploaded into the "Prac Write-ups" tab.
The report is due on Friday the 19th of February.

How to conduct experiments
In today's class we looked at how we go about conducting an experiment. We looked at setting out the report, coming up with a hypothesis, setting out results, discussing these results, and also different variables involved in an experiment. All of the information can be found in the PowerPoint from the lesson. You can access that by clicking here, or in the class content tab at the top of the page.

Welcome
Welcome to the website for Grade 9 Extended Science. The idea of this website is for you to have access to what we cover in class, even if you miss a lesson. You will be able to access the content we cover in class, and any assignments or experiments we do throughout the year. I will also put up useful websites and other links that I think you may find helpful or interesting.
If you have any questions or suggestions for this page, you may talk to me about these at any time.
